On January 11th, Bloomberg News reported that Apple decided to customize more components to lessen dependency on technical partners such as Samsung and LG. According to the report, Apple plans to produce its own Apple Watch Ultra display by the end of 2024. The company is expected to replace the display from outside suppliers to an internally developed and designed Micro Light Emitting Diode (LED). Apple’s recent movement appears that it aims to gain more control over its products’ designs and functions, reminding the case of loading Apple Silicon instead of Microsoft’s Intel chip in 2020. Furthermore, iPhone’s 5G modem chip will be swapped with Apple’s in-house processor. The plan will likely deal a blow to Samsung and LG, the two main suppliers. LG Display is the primary supplier of the Apple Watch, and the supply rate of Samsung Display for Apple’s iPhone 14 series is about 82%. However, it will take more time in Korea to expand the custom display to other goods as Apple’s sales are insignificant in Korea’s Organic LED market. Kim Jeong-hwan, a Korea Investment and Securities researcher, predicted that the plan’s domestic application will be after 2025.
