On March 22nd, the Special Committee on Political Reform (Reform Committee) of the National Assembly passed a bill to revise the election system, which will be submitted to the Whole House Committee. The Reform Committee agreed to discuss and process the three suasions proposed by the Advisory Committee on Constitutional Reform and Political System Improvement with the Speaker of the National Assembly. Under the revised bill, the Regional and Parallel proportional (PR) System and the Regional and Semilinked PR System of the Small Electoral District System will maintain the current 253 seats for the constituencies. There would also be an increase in its proportional representation seats from 47 to 97. Meanwhile, the Regional and Parallel Proportional Representation System proposed by the People Power party is a complex electoral system that elects one person considering the population and administrative districts. However, two of three bills faced backlashes as they contained revisions to raising the number of members by 50. As a result, the revised bills — three amendment proposals passed by the subcommittee — were presented without a statement regarding the enlarged number of members. At the following plenary session, the bills will be processed by the ruling and opposition parties. The discussion of the electoral system reform started on the 27th and proceeded for approximately two weeks.
