The Biden administration has approved the Willow Project despite strong disagreements from environmental organizations and Democratic Party members. The Willow Project is an oil development project located within the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, pursued by a hydrocarbon company ConocoPhillips. With the government’s approval, the project is expected to produce approximately 600 million barrels of crude oil over the next 30 years. The United States (U.S.) Bureau of Land Management announced a new environmental impact assessment and supports for a less intensive drilling plan by reducing the original five drilling facilities down to three. However, the dispute continued as President Biden pledged to decarbonize the U.S. economy by 2050 during his 2020 presidential campaign. The pledge included his promise to suspend oil and gas drilling on federal land, but the government ultimately approved the oil development project as demands for domestic oil production arose. Environmental activists criticized such approval of a large-scale oil project which directly threatens the potential for a clean economy. On the other hand, Alaska’s delegation welcomed the decision. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski remarked, “After years of persistence, we stand at the pinnacle of creating thousands of jobs and improving the quality of life for North Slope and even our entire state.”
