On April 24th, Netflix announced a $2.5 billion investment in Korean media content for the next four years. Regarding the decision, Netflix’s co- CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized the uniqueness of K-content by saying, “We are deepening our partnership with the Korean creative industry, which has produced amazing hits such as Squid Game, The Glory, and Physical 100.” Meanwhile, two opposite analyses surround Netflix’s investment plan. On the bright side, there are expectations that Korea has given the green light to create new jobs and develop media contents. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) predicted the funding would create approximately 68,000 jobs. Furthermore, with a larger budget for creation than before, producers also welcomed the announcement that could improve their content quality. However, the funding can also threaten the domestic Over-The-Top (OTT) market, which largely depends on its original content. As domestic producers may not be able to afford the higher production cost of K-content triggered by Netflix’s mega-round, the whole industry is expected to face a downfall. Additionally, Netflix’s copyright allocation system is also stirring up great concern. Currently, Netflix has an exclusive right to all of its original content. Therefore, its investment without revisions to its copyright system could only come as an invasion of the domestic OTT industry.
