March has come, and it has been a little more than a year since people have not been able to go out freely. Everyone wants to get out now; however, it might be difficult to leave your home sweet home. Similarly, the world is surrounded by monsters all of a sudden, and the only safe place is my sweet home. But this place might also become dangerous soon, though. The recently successful Netflix K-monster drama, Sweet Home, describes the struggle between monsters changed by excessive desires and humans who have not changed yet. The Sungkyun Times (SKT) will now dig up how Sweet Home drew sympathy from all over the world.
There’s Something About Sweet Home
Evolved K-Monster Drama
Sweet Home is a Netflix Original K-monster horror TV series, which is produced based on the Naver Webtoon, and it was released on December 18th last year. After it ranked 3rd in Netflix’s global drama rankings on December 21st, 22 million paid subscribers viewed the show in the first four weeks after the release. Sweet Home, which is distinguishable from other Netflix K-zombie hit works like Kingdom and #Alive , describes the inner minds and desires of humans with Korean sentiments. People around the world note that Sweet Home has evolved from the two K-zombie works. Normally, people become monsters when they are bitten in typical zombie films. In Sweet Home, however, people change into monsters by themselves because of the common human nature of desire. Plus, the stories of common zombie films usually end with people who have survived, but in Sweet Home, it rather introduces various reasons why people become monsters and their life stories.

Plot *Spoiler Alert/Contains Horrific Contents
Loner Hyun-soo loses his family in a car accident and moves to a new apartment alone. A week later, monsters suddenly show up in the world, and Hyun-soo and other residents are isolated in the apartment block. Eun-hyuk, a medical student, strategizes to survive, and a former firefighter, Yi-kyeong, goes out to search outside. Soon, some people in the apartment start to turn into monsters due to their excessive desires. Hyun-soo also turns into a monster, but he returns to a human; this change occurs several times. Meanwhile, Yi-kyeong gets captured by the military, and she hears the fact that Hyun-soo is the key solution to the situation. Residents are put in circumstances where they have to battle for survival against monsters and the military. At the same time, they should fight against their own desires, and not turn into monsters. Like this, the episodes continue with the introduction of the desires and stories of residents.

Every Monster was Human
In Sweet Home, everyone has a desire, and if their desires get excessively bigger, those desires eat away at them and make them monsters. Because of this, the monsters look similar to the desires they had when they were humans. The peculiar point is that there are some monsters helping people depending on their own desires. For example, a liquid monster, who changed because of the strong desire to survive, saves a child in danger. In contrast to this, grown-ups try to kill all the monsters. The military even tries to get rid of the rest of the people because everyone might turn into monsters. Sweet Home seems to illustrate the confrontation between monsters and humans. In fact, it shows the conflict between people and people. In reality, people harm each other, but they also help others for their own sake. The person who distresses you could be dear to his friends and amily, and your best friend may be an enemy for someone else. Like this, all people have ambivalent sides, and we cannot judge if someone is good or bad. Thus, in fact, everyone is a monster and a human at the same time.

The Reason Why Sweet Home Is the Title
What does home mean to you? Rather than simply functioning as a residential place, it gives peace and safety. Therefore, home means the time and space that make you happy and feel comfortable. It could be a time to sing a song while playing the guitar or practicing ballet on the rooftop. However, Hyun-soo did not have his own home. He was bullied at school, but no one helped him, and even his family ignored him. Residents also lost their real homes, and suddenly they become hunted by monsters. To survive, people try to protect the apartment even if it is not their true home. In this situation, Hyun-soo hears the guitar sound and names it Sweet Home. Plus, he says, “It makes me feel like I’m home.” While people are threatened by monsters, they start to sincerely care about and protect each other. Hyun-soo can begin to recover his own peace and stability in this process. Do you have your own home? The reason why Sweet Home is the title is here. What does home mean to you? Are you truly happy at the time and place if you have a real home? If not, you should face yourself and ask whether you are painfully surrounded by desires even in your own home. Like Hyun-soo, who is about to turn into a monster but returns to a human through communication with himself.

There are lots of reasons why Sweet Home succeeded, but probably the main reason is that many people have thought the story is similar to their own, while watching the episodes. Everyone has their own sweet home, which is a place to find peace. That might be imagining about going on a trip with friends, dreams hoping to come true someday, a loving family and lovers, or resting time with pets. Sometimes people get greedy and become pained by themselves. But do not forget that everyone has the power to fight with their outer and inner enemies. May your sweet home be safe.
