In August, former United States (U.S.) president Donald Trump, along with 18 defendants, were indicted on charges of attempting to overturn Georgia’s vote in the 2020 presidential election. This was already his fourth indictment, along with previous charges of trying to overturn election results, leaking confidential documents, and allegations of sexual harassment. In the latest indictment, Trump was accused of calling the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, requesting him to find 11,780 votes to overturn his loss in the presidential election. The indictment claimed that Trump and the other defendants refused to accept the election defeat and willfully participated in a conspiracy to alter the election results in favor of Trump. It further referred to Trump and the other accused as a “criminal enterprise.” Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney, commented, “Their indictment alleges that rather than abide by Georgia’s legal process for election challenges, the defendants engaged in a criminal racketeering enterprise to overturn Georgia’s presidential election result.” Trump became the first former U.S. president in history to be indicted by federal prosecutors. Nevertheless, he pleaded innocence to all charges, characterizing them as part of a political conspiracy against him. He strongly criticized the indictment on social media, saying that he had not attempted to overturn the results, adding that it was a framed political witch-hunt. The trial for Trump’s charges will begin in March of the following year, and it could pose a big threat to Trump in the next presidential election of 2024.
