An armed conflict has broken out between Israel and the Palestinian political and military organization Hamas around the Gaza Strip. This conflict can be seen as a rupture of longstanding tensions that have been brewing for 75 years since the First Arab-Israeli War in 1947. Fighting broke out on October 7th after Hamas launched an unexpected attack on Southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and kidnapping over 200 hostages. Israel immediately responded to the event with a ground invasion of Gaza, killing over 11,000 Palestinians, according to Hamas’s health ministry. The conflict has continued to escalate, which has put more civilians closer to the dangers of war. Criticism is directed at both Hamas and Israel for their apparent disregard for the protection of civilians. Hamas and Israel have repeatedly carried out attacks against civilians, with Hamas being criticized for multiple civilian massacres, and Israel being criticized for hitting civilian targets such as schools and hospitals. Meanwhile, Gaza is currently cut off from all internet and communication, leaving people trapped in the middle of the war zone with a significant lack of basic resources such as food, water, and medical aid. In response, on October 23rd, the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for a ceasefire, emphasizing that humanity must come first. While the international community is increasingly calling for peace, the situation in Gaza is showing no signs of slowing down.
