On January 25th, Joe Biden, the United States (US) President, overturned the executive order about permitting transgender Americans to join the military that former President Trump had virtually banned. In the time of Trump’s tenure, those who did not come out as transgender could not pursue transition and were required to serve as their assigned sex at birth. Furthermore, those who were diagnosed with gender dysphoria were not allowed to enlist. In November 2020, the Palm Center, which studies LGBTQ in the military, reported the ban lowered the morale of transgender soldiers and shrank the recruiting pool, resulting in a decline of military power. When signing an executive order, President Biden professed that the US’s strength is found in its diversity and that he would enable all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform. The Department of Defense will reexamine transgender service members discharged from the military due to their gender identity. Also, transgender people can now enlist in the military openly and freely from discrimination. After the executive order announcement, positive reactions and concerns coexist in the US. According to an interview from First Coast News, one attorney explained that the present order does not eliminate problems for transgender service members. Nevertheless, he is happy that brothers and sisters could join the military service with some peace semblance.
