On March 8th at 9:20 a.m., a 9-ton ladder truck fell on top of the Munmyo (Treasure No. 131) Dongsammun (Historical landmark No. 143) that is located at the entrance of the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. Munmyo is the place where saints of Confucianism and those who taught Confucianism during the Joseon dynasty are enshrined. Dongsammun is a gate where the kings of the Joseon dynasty entered to attend rituals. As these national heritages are important sources of architectural history research, they are priceless. The accident occurred when the crane bar broke while moving the ladder truck over the fence to prune trees around the Munmyo and Daeseongjeon Shrine. There was no personal injury; however, a 6.5m by 4.7m section of the roof of Dongsammun was damaged. The Jongno-gu office announced that they would soon start on the restoration works after estimating the extent of the damage. Furthermore, the Cultural Heritage Administration said a safety device has been installed over the damaged roof, and they will determine whether the cultural property repair company properly followed safety rules and clarify the accident details and where the responsibility lies.
