The 38th Election for Seoul mayor was held on April 7th, 2021. During the election campaign, both representative parties appealed to the people by promising policies that they care about. There were a total of 15 candidates for the mayoral election, and the two strongest candidates were Park Youngsun from the Democratic Party of Korea and Oh Se-hoon from the People Power Party. The election results were announced on April 8th, with candidate Oh winning the vote with 57.50% and candidate Park taking 2nd place with 39.18%. With this result, Oh Se-hoon has started his third term as the Mayor of Seoul. One of his promises was to create a better welfare policy for people. To be specific, he promised to guarantee “safe income” by supporting the people whose actual income is below the median income. If this policy ever takes place, the government will firstly demonstrate its effectiveness by randomly choosing 200 families as part of a test run. Although it sounds like an excellent policy, there is a worry that Seoul’s budget will probably not be large enough to expand this project any further. Overall, with two mayors being elected from the People Power Party in Seoul and Busan, the country’s political stance seems to be slowly shifting to the right.
