On September 23rd, the United States (US) White House and the Department of Commerce convened the 3rd semiconductor-related meeting, and controversy arose as the contents of the meeting were revealed to have requested disclosure of the company’s internal trade secrets. In the meeting, automobile manufacturers and semiconductor manufacturers participated. According to The Wall Street Journal, the meeting covered the global semiconductor shortage, the current state of the semiconductor supply chain caused by the Delta variant, and efforts to improve transparency and trust among semiconductor suppliers and consumers. Most companies involved in the meeting were surveyed by the Department of Commerce; this survey required sensitive information that was confidential to the company. The supplier companies were asked about semiconductor-related annual sales and orders, the top three customers, and their sales ratios. In addition, they were asked about the purchase plan, contract period, supply disruptions, and investment plans. In terms of the semiconductor market, customer and sales information is a very crucial secret because of price sensitivity, which is related to innovative products. A company official said, “This is the first time that another country’s government has requested market information directly from companies.” Experts believe that this request was essential for the US to change the unstable supply chain and secure supplies in the process of reorganizing the global supply chain.
