The 1st special lecture of the course, “The Age of Upheaval”, was held on November 9th by Professor Koo Jeong-woo, from the Department of Sociology at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and Professor Jared Diamond, who is from the University of California, Los Angeles and a chair-professor of SKKU University College. “The Age of Upheaval” is a global course jointly developed by Prof. Koo and Prof. Diamond this semester. The global course is a new type of lecture in which students watch famous erudite scholar’s online lectures in advance and then discuss and debate about them in offline classes. With the topic of “Be Prepared!”, the special lecture was held in the Live Virtual Studio in the Business School building, both online and offline. Prof. Koo hosted the special lecture while Prof. Diamond participated online, and about 230 students and 30 faculty members participated. Through the lecture, the two professors claimed that “It is important to know how to preemptively prevent the crises we will confront such as the global supply-chain crisis.” Furthermore, Jo Jun-mo, the Vice President of the Humanities Social Sciences Campus, mentioned that “Through grafting university lectures with renowned scholar’s lectures like that of Jared Diamond, we can cultivate globally innovative individuals who can immediately respond to global issues.”
