Facebook Changes Company Name to “Meta”
The CEO of Meta, Mark Ellio Zuckerberg (mk.co.kr)

On October 28th, the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, revealed a new logo and name for Facebook, “Meta”, with the wish of creating a metaverse environment that allows people to communicate both in reality and virtually. A metaverse is a compound word using meta and universe, having the meaning of virtuality and reality. The metaverse has the feature of people being capable of doing social and cultural activities in virtuality as if they are doing them in reality. The new logo is made up of the mathematical symbol meaning infinite. The important thing is that they are changing the company name, not the actual name of the famous Social Network Service (SNS) platform “Facebook”. Therefore, the applications under Meta, such as Facebook or Instagram, will not be changing their names. By changing the name of the company, Zuckerberg will lead the digital next-generation, and he explained that Meta’s goal is to create the technology of connecting people. On the other hand, some people say that this event just looked like a marketing gimmick, which is to change the company’s negative image after getting exposed by internal accusers. However, since Meta already possesses 2.74 billion users based on data of January in 2021, it is highly likely that Meta will lead the metaverse market. Finally, Mark Zuckerberg expressed his expectations saying “Metaverse would be our new challenge, just like we first started social networking.”
