On May 2nd, the conferment ceremony of the honorary doctorate degree was held online between the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and the National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taiwan. An honorary doctorate degree can be awarded to those who have made special contributions to academic development. In 1964, the two universities signed a Student Exchange Agreement. Afterward, since 1975, eight Presidents of SKKU and six Presidents of the NCCU have been awarded honorary doctorate degrees. In particular, given that the term of both Presidents has expired this year and the pandemic, the conferment ceremony was held online. The President of NCCU explained the conferment, saying, “After President Shin Dong-ryeol took office as the 21st President of SKKU in 2019, he made Student Success a core value for the first time in Korea. Moreover, he contributed to the development of a global prestigious university and becoming a model for higher education in Korea, taking the achievement of students as the achievement of the school.” In return, President Shin said, “In the meaningful year of the 58th anniversary of the exchange between the two universities, it is an honor to receive this degree from a prestigious university in Taiwan.” He resolved to reflect on the true meaning of the degree and contribute to nurturing talented students.
