The Festival Internacional Cervantino is a synthetic arts festival that combines diverse arts such as theater, opera, music, dance, street art, visual arts, and film. Along with the festival, there are also several events such as photo exhibitions, film festivals, workshops, and seminars. The festival will be held from October 12th to 30th in the medieval Mexican city of Guanajuato. The festival’s scale has grown yearly since it was first held in 1972 and has now grown into an international arts festival declared a World Heritage. This year, celebrating the festival’s 50th anniversary, Korea has been invited as the “Guest Country of Honor” for the festival. The Korean Cultural Center in Mexico invited the Department of Fine Art of Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and 15 graduate students and undergraduates, including Professors Lee Sang-bong, Cho Hwan, Jung Yeon-doo, and Shin Hak, who will participate as invited artists. The group will present a collection of visual artworks at the festival under the title “Korean Contemporary Art: Across the Pacific.” Prof. Lee said, “We look forward to promoting Korean art through a cultural and academic exchange in Mexico as well as forming a new artistic community. This event will be a great opportunity to expand the scope of Korean art.”
