On August 15th, a delegation from the Congress of the United States (U.S.) met Taiwan’s dignitaries and discussed the relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan’s trade investment, and the global supply chain. The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) explained that the visit reflected stable support of the U.S. Congress towards Taiwan. However, the Chinese military tried to resist the visit by mobilizing combat aircraft and warships near the Taiwanese Islands. According to a report by the Central News Agency, 30 combat aircraft and 5 warships entered the Taiwanese territory by 5 p.m. on August 15th, and 25 of the aircraft even crossed the Taiwan Strait median line. The Taiwan Strait median line is the boundary that Benjamin Davis, a former U.S. Air Force general, declared to prevent a military collision between China and Taiwan in 1955. China responded to the visit of the U.S. by nullifying this boundary. Sui, a spokesperson of Eastern Theater Command in China, said through the official account of Chinese messenger, WeChat, that the training was a “strict warning aimed at the U.S. and Taiwan due to their destruction of peace and the stability of the Taiwan Strait.” Meanwhile, the U.S. started trade negotiations with Taiwan despite China’s pressure. According to Bloomberg News and CNBC, a U.S. Trade Representative said, “the first trade negotiation with Taiwan will be in autumn this year,” which would enhance the importance of two-way trade and promote economic growth.
