On October 27th, the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) council appointed Professor Yoo Ji- beom of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering as the 22nd president of SKKU. President Yoo, who turned 63 this year, received his Ph.D. in materials engineering from Stanford University after earning a master’s degree in materials science and engineering from Seoul National University. Following his studies, he worked as a senior research engineer at the Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea. Later, he served as Director of the Center for Innovative Engineering Education, Deputy Director of the SKKU Advanced Institute of Nano Technology, Dean of the College of Engineering, Executive Vice President of SKKU, President of Research and Business Foundation of SKKU, and, as of January, Director of Research for the National Research Foundation of Korea. Professor Yoo was unanimously approved as the new president by the SKKU council after considering his experiences inside and outside the university to be highly competent and likely to provide innovative leadership. President Yoo’s tenure begins on January 1st, 2023, and ends on December 31st, 2026.
