Sungkyunkyun University (SKKU) held its 2018 Matriculation Ceremony on February 27th at Suseong Hall on the Natural Sciences Campus. Prior to the ceremony, on February 26th, 31 academic board members, including the university president Jung Gyu-sang, headed to Daeseongjeon, the “Hall of Great Achievement,” at Munmyo, Seoul to hold Goyurye. Goyurye is a unique ceremony that belongs to SKKU that informs the spirits of Confucian scholars of the beginning of big events such as matriculation and graduation. With 4,077 freshmen in attendance, the ceremony began with the marching of the academic board members along with the school flag. Correspondingly to the motto of the school, “Truly, Global Leading University,” two freshmen, Gasimoba Leila from the College of Liberal Arts and Lee Young-min from the College of Engineering, read the freshman oath requesting their matriculation. In response to their oath, President Jung read an oath accepting the students into the school. He welcomed all freshmen and said, “You have now become family members of SKKU, and we are going to share all of your emotions with you, both joy and remorse.” He also added that he expects students’ participation and innovation to make SKKU a truly global leading university and to open the proud era of SKKU. Shin Yoon-ha, the president of SKKU Alumni association, urged the students to relentlessly ask themselves what they truly long for and encouraged them who were to start a life-long journey. President Jung also gave out awards to Jung Sang-hoon from the College of Social Sciences and Hong So-young from the School of Medicine for entering SKKU at the top of the Class of 2022. The first half of the matriculation ceremony ended as the students threw paper airplanes. Meanwhile, the second half consisted of the performances of numerous school clubs and the famous Korean idol group, Mamamoo.
