On January 8th, the inauguration ceremony of the 21st president of Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) was held at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. About 1,000 people, including officials and executives of SKKU, attended the ceremony. The new president, Shin Dong-ryeol, graduated SKKU with a degree in electronic engineering in 1980 and was appointed as a professor at SKKU in 1994. Based on his 24 years of teaching experience, he is now starting a new challenge as a university president. At the ceremony, he proposed SKKU’s new vision as a global leading university that achieves student success and creates future value, and suggested four specific action plans. The first plan is to initiate educational innovation focusing on student success. The change is to make the university serve as a space of growth for students to find their own purpose of life, not simply an institution that shares knowledge. The second plan is to encourage convergent and comprehensive researches, which transcend boundaries of majors and campuses. For example, practical cooperation and joint research between the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, Natural Sciences Campus and Samsung Medical Center will begin. The third plan is to support university professors’ researches for their accomplishments to contribute to the society, so that the university can serve as an active partner of companies, government, and the world. The fourth plan is to create a unique culture and brand of the campus that symbolizes the founding philosophy, achieving self-perfection and peace for mankind (修己治人), and the traditions of SKKU. Besides this, he also expressed his desire to do his best to communicate with university members by offering different channels for multi-directional interaction. His four-year term as the 21st president started on January 1st, 2019 and will run through to December 31st, 2022.
