Exhibition - Pierre-Auguste Renoir Convergence Art Exhibition: Scent of a Woman
The Renoir Exhibition: Scent of a Woman covers Renoir’s beautiful works. Pierre Auguste Renoir was a French painter who is famous for his impressionist style of paint works. This exhibition is held to show Renoir’s works by offering the audience an interactive experience through the form of “convergence art”, which combines artworks with digital media technology. In this exhibition, people can enjoy art with their five senses. For example, in a section with a garden, people can hear bird song, and they can smell the scent of lavender. Renoir loved the beauty of life and created many artworks using light and color. Therefore, Renoir’s pursuit of beauty is the main topic of this exhibition. Kim Ryeo-won, the director of this exhibition mentioned that this exhibition would allow the audiences to heal their minds. The whole exhibition includes ten sections where visitors can enjoy Renoir’s artworks. From the prologue section “Banquet of Flowers” to the epilogue section “His Scent”, the exhibition consists of artworks which Renoir created with diverse topics such as the beauty of nature, the lady, and daily life. It would be good to see this exhibition especially in the warm spring, so the Sungkyun Times (SKT) recommends Kingos check it out. The exhibition is being held at the Seouliteum Galleria Foret, which is a branch of the BonDavinci Museum near Seoul Forest Park in Seongdong-gu until April 26th. The opening hours of the exhibition are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the time for the last admission is 6 p.m. This museum is closed every Monday. The price of the ticket is 15,000 won for an adult over 20 years old.
Book - Laplace’s Movement - Keigo Higashino
Laplace’s Movement, a newly published book by Keigo Higashino, who is a representative of Japanese mystery novels and known for his work The Miracles of the Namiya General Store, became popular in the fiction section. Laplace’s Movement is a prequel of Laplace’s Witch, which the author published on the 30th anniversary of his debut, in 2015. This newly released novel covers the previous story of the main character Uhara Madoka in Laplace’s Witch. The story begins with an encounter between Kudo Nayuta, a practitioner in acupuncture and moxibustion, and Uhara Madoka, a teenage girl. They meet again and again, and every time that Nayuta sees Madoka, with her special ability, she makes miracles happen for frustrated people. This story consists of five chapters that can be seen as independent short stories. Laplace’s Movement, however, is in omnibus format, which means that the five stories finally come together to create one complete story. The author compares in this story human beings to atoms, which are the smallest constituent units of the whole world. Different characters appearing in five chapters are introduced as the main characters of each chapter. The characters receive help from Madoka, the heroine of the whole story, in their desperate situations. She helps characters with her ability to calculate all movements of atoms. Kingos are recommended to read this novel and imagine that a friend like Madoka could make amazing miracles happen when they feel depressed.
Movie – Birthday
The movie, Birthday, which was released on April 3rd, is a story about a bereaved family who suffered from the death of their son due to the sinking of the Sewol Ferry, which killed 304 people in 2014. This movie covers the story of the bereaved family celebrating their dead son’s birthday and sharing their memories together. It is the first movie focusing on a bereaved family from the Sewol Ferry incident. Actors Seol Kyung-gu and Jeon Do-yeon, who are both recognized for their great acting, play the lead roles in the movie. Seol Kyung-gu acts as a father who always feels sorry for his family, and Jeon Do-yeon acts as a mother who misses her dead son. Rookie director Lee Jong-eon directed this movie, and his direction in several scenes of this movie is raising expectations, including a scene from the trailer that portrays a happy family before the tragedy occurs, a scene in a classroom and hallway full of yellow Post-it notes for remembering the victims of the accident, and a scene of families and friends sharing stories of a son on his birthday. Unlike other movies analyzing and focusing on the Sewol Ferry tragedy, this movie focuses on consoling the victim’s family and attempting to cure their pain.
Album - Sleepless in __________ - Epik High
Korean hip-hop group Epik High released their new Extended Play (EP) Album on March 11th. Five artists collaborated with Epik High for this album; in particular, famous artists such as Suga from BTS, and Sunwoojunga collaborated. The album consists of seven songs, and the title song is Lovedrunk, which is collaboration with hip-hop and R&B singer Crush. Epik High is a group of alternative hip-hop, a subgenre of hip- hop, and composed of three members: Tablo, DJ Tukutz, and Mithra Jin. They contributed to the popularization of Korean hip-hop by combining it with other genres with literary lyrics. This album, Sleepless in __________, is made for people who are suffering from insomnia everywhere. Epik High leaves the blank in the album title so that listeners can fill in the blank with their own locations like the name of their city or area. For instance, Kingos who are not sleeping because of the midterm exam can _ll in the blank, as follows “Sleepless in SKKU”. Epik High intended to make whole songs on the album into an audiobook so that listeners can feel as if they were listening to short stories in one book when they play all the songs in order. People who are sleepless because of concerns like nightmares, failures in love, and worries about their futures are recommended to listen to this album. Through these melancholy but heart-warming songs, Kingos can be awake at night, and not feel alone.
