The football team of SKKU won the 55th Spring Korea University Football Confederation (KUFC) Championship in the Tongyeong Cup’s final game against Chung Ang University (CAU), which was held at Gyeongsangnam-do Tongyeong’s sports field on 27th, February. It is one of the biggest university football championships in Korea with about 80 universities nationwide participating and showing their abilities, which was held from February 12th to 27th this year. Around 80 football teams took part in the KUFC Championship this year. Considering the total number of 84 national college football teams, the Championship has one of the highest numbers of participants. Interestingly, unlike other sports tournaments, 80 participating teams were divided into two groups, 40 teams each, so that the Championship took place in two separate groups of KBS N and Tongyeong, which resulted in two winners.
The final match between SKKU and CAU was unpredictable. In the first half, CAU player Yang Chang-hoon made the first goal, but Kim Min-soo from SKKU scored a goal with a header. Eventually, during extra time, a free kick goal by SKKU player In Seok-hwan brought a 2-1 victory to SKKU. While having finished 2nd in the Spring KUFC Championships four times in the previous years, SKKU finally won the 1st prize for the first time this year. The SKKU football team finally got out of the habit of finishing as runners-up. Also it was the first victory that the SKKU football team achieved since the new coach, Jeong Seong-cheon, was assigned, which made the victory more valuable. Kinogs who are curious about the new coach of the SKKU football team are able to read the SKT’s interview with Coach Jeong Seong-cheon in SKKU People this month.
