Last August, the Korea Toray Science Foundation (KTSF) announced the respective winners of both the Korea Toray Science and Technology award as well as the Korea Toray Science and Technology Research Fund. The KTSF is a newly established public benefit corporation built under Toray Industries, Inc., a longstanding corporation located in Japan and aims to contribute to the advancement of scientific development, particularly in the field of chemistry. Since its establishment a year ago, the KTSF has been on the search for the right candidates for the Science and Technology Award in both the basics and the applications sector. Proceeding the thorough evaluation of numerous academic entries, Lee Doo-sung, a professor of the Chemical Engineering department and the Polymer Science Engineering department at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), was selected to receive the award for the applications sector. Prof. Lee’s research concerning polymeric nanoparticles and injectable biodegradable hydrogel has proposed information that could provide significant aid in the field of applied medical sciences. With the help of his research, Prof. Lee has been able to open the door to many possibilities concerning the treatment of particular diseases such as cancer, cerebral infection, and diabetes; his research may have been the groundbreaking academic breakthrough necessary to reshape how doctors approach treating their patients’ illnesses.
