On September 6th, SKKU held the “2019 Eurasian Sungkyun Korean Essay Contest” at the Lotte City Hotel Tashkent Palace in Uzbekistan. With the intent of making friendly ties with the rest of the world through the medium that is the Korean language, SKKU has been holding Korean essay contests in various parts of the world for over a decade now. These contests, as well as being the perfect way to showcase the beauty of our language, also serve as a good opportunity for interested students to learn more about Korea’s heritage. This particular contest was the 11th one to be held in the Middle East so far, and many individuals from neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey showed up, totaling 59 participants. The prize for first, second, and third place winners would be a full two-year graduate scholarship. The contest was held in relation to the theme, “What If,” and Park Hyun-soon, Head of SKKU’s Office of International Affairs, explained that this year’s theme was chosen with the hopes of seeing how far participants’ imaginations could stretch. The event was documented by Documentary 3 Days’ team from the Korean Broadcasting Station (KBS) and will air on October 11th, in commemoration of Hangeul Proclamation Day.
