Since Dokdo Day was declared for the first time on October 25th of 2000, many groups have celebrated the Korean islets on the East Sea. This year as well, many have been preparing for the celebration. Last September, the Seoul Metropolitan City launched a Special Committee on Dokdo Protection. According to the committee leader Hong Seong-ryong, the committee was found to fulfill the mission of preparing for and rising against the Japanese threat of claiming the islets. Fifteen committee members were selected to actualize the agenda for the next six months. In addition, a civil organization, the Dokdo Foundation, also hosted a Dokdo promotional contest last September. The contest rewarded university students who combined cultural and artistic contents with the image of the islets, raising awareness of Dokdo’s nature and its beauty. Such celebrations were especially meaningful as the Korean senator Yoo Geun-shik made a signifying visit to the islets along with the members of an organization called Dokdo Hyangwoohoe or Dokdo Hometown Alumni Association that incited condemnation from Japanese politicians last September.
