The replacement of the sports ground with artificial turf at the Large Playground on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, officially began this November. The project was one of the election pledges of SKKU’s 51st student council Sparkle. SKKU has maintained the existing dirt ground since the opening of the Large Playground in 1962 although the ground has caused many problems including frequent injuries, clouds of dust, and drainage problems during rainy seasons. However, the commencement of the project had been continuously postponed due to the lack of funds and parking facilities. Since the school has used the Large Playground as a parking lot, they have not allowed the ground to be replaced with artificial turf. Hence, the student council Sparkle conducted a survey to collect students’ opinions on the school’s facilities in January 2019. According to the results of the survey, many students expressed the need for grass and Sparkle delivered the students’ opinions to the school administration. In April 2019, Sparkle started the project “Our Voice for Artificial Turf” to encourage the replacement of the dirt ground with artificial turf. As part of their project, Sparkle produced video interviews and card news, installed message boards, and produced goods that were sold to students to raise awareness for artificial turf. Between September and October, the design and the selection for the construction company had taken place. Students should be aware that the Large Playground will be closed for use during the construction period.
