At the end of September, there was an issue regarding Shinsung Pharm, a pharmaceutical company that delivered 5.78 million doses of flu vaccines to the government, which makes up 85% of the total supply. The issue was that some of the flu vaccinations were exposed to heat during the delivery process. After being informed of an issue, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) interrupted the provision of flu vaccinations from September 22nd and started a thorough investigation. On October 6th, the government released a report and announced that there would be no safety issues associated with the heat-exposed flu shots and that there is no problem with the quality of the shots. However, it has since been revealed that the vaccines were also under poor management during the process of storage. On October 7th, a congress member, Shin Hyun-young, also a member of the Health and Welfare Committee announced the 2019 Second Half Report of Flu Vaccination Consignment Organizations. According to this report, among the 11,047 organizations that the KDCA visited and inspected, 2,312 organizations (21.0%) turned out to be managing vaccinations under poor conditions. Also, 603 organizations did not manage the cleanliness of their vaccine refrigerators, 206 organizations did not have vaccine refrigerators, and 57 organizations stored expired flu vaccinations. Jeong Eun-kyeong, director of the KDCA apologized for the poor conditions of delivery and storage of the flu shots and promised to improve the vaccination management conditions.
