Professor Chae Jong-seo’s research team of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Information and Communication was selected as one of the 10 best research and tracking surveys by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP) on November 11, 2020. The name of excellent performance is, “Development of Core Technology of Cyclotron Accelerator for Production of Copper Element.” The research project undertaken by Prof. Chae is the task of developing cyclotron accelerators for isotope production. The medical cyclotron is currently used in general hospitals to produce radioactive isotopes for diagnosing nuclear medicine. These positron emission elements are the components that make up our bodies, so we can use them to track biochemical changes in our bodies. The core technologies of this cyclotron are expected to be used in various fields such as production of radioactive isotopes for medical and industrial use, production of nano semiconductor devices and materials, production of high-capacity hard disks using spintronics of charged particles, testing of non-destructive materials, and research on plant genomes and mutation generation.
