Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was elected the 46th president of the United States (US) on November 7th. While the US presidential transition took place after Election Day, the US has been in the middle of crisis and confusion. Donald Trump has refused to concede the result of the election, posting tweets since November 10th, and he is currently blocking cooperation for the transition. Thus, the US is facing hardships to solve the prevailing problems such as the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, and economic recovery. Furthermore, as Trump demanded a personnel shake-up at the Pentagon by firing several senior officials and replacing them with Trump loyalists, political confusion seems to persist in the US. Biden’s win has also affected the global economy. The US dollar index (USDX), a measure of the value of the US dollar relative to the value of currencies of the US’s most significant trading partners, fell as much as 2% in a week since Election Day. Many countries in the world have reacted diversely as their interest with the US. The countries that maintained bad relationships with President Trump, such as Germany and France, quickly congratulated Biden on his victory after the election. Biden, however, called Russia’s President Vladimir Putin a “KGB thug” and described Russia as the biggest threat to the US. Therefore, Putin remained silent on the election, foreshadowing potential changes in international relationships.
