Introduction of the Pre-Registration System
From the 2025 spring semester, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) has introduced the class pre-registration system. This system does not operate on a first-come, first-served basis and allows students to register for or cancel courses freely within the designated period, regardless of class quota. It took place from February 7th to February 10th. The number of students who signed up during the pre-registration period was meant to provide an estimate of student demand for professors to conduct the first round of class size adjustments, which spanned from February 12th to February 16th. Then, on February 17th, the pre-registration was confirmed. If the class quota was equal to or greater than the number of applicants, the student’s registration would have been confirmed. On the other hand, if the class quota was less than the number of applicants, their registration for the said course would have been deleted entirely. Depending on the outcome of the preregistration, students would choose to participate in the first-come, first-served class registration, which was separated by year level as normal. According to the 57th student council S:CATCH, the new pre-registration system aims to encourage professors to increase course capacity. Unlike the previous system where only students who had received a waitlist number could request additional slots in a class, this allows all students to do so during pre-registration. This also motivates professors to expand course quotas according to the demand. With the early confirmation of course registration, the system is also expected to stabilize fluctuations in class registration during the first week of the semester.
