Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) was selected for the 2025 Lab-Based Startup Leading University Program last April. The program is co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) and jointly administered by the Commercialization Promotion Agency for R&D Outcomes (COMPA) and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). The program aims to connect outstanding university research with technology-based startups to spread laboratory-driven entrepreneurship throughout the country. Receiving government funding of  ₩ 1.967 billion over two years, SKKU plans to support deep tech and science startups in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), biology, and semiconductors. It aims to foster a strong lab-based startup ecosystem by leveraging its research capabilities and collaborating with accelerators, venture capital firms, and public institutions. The university has already seen success with startups such as SKAIX, H&S Biolab, and Mimetics, which have shown strong technological capabilities and market potential. Professor Kim Kyung-hwan, Dean of the Graduate School of Global Entrepreneurship, stated that this program will expand successful cases of lab-based startups led by faculty and graduate students, positioning SKKU as a core hub of technology entrepreneurship. Through this initiative, the school plans to establish a regional science-tech acceleration system alongside Suwon City and Gyeonggi Province.
