South Korea-U.S. Joint Military Drill: Threat to North Korea?

South Korea and the United States (U.S.) military resumed large-scale field exercises from August 22^nd to September 1^st, rebranded as Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS). The joint exercise used to be conducted as a computer simulation-based training exercise, but this year’s military drill will include an outdoor exercise to increase the effectiveness of the training. The UFS has been resumed in five years since it was abolished in 2018 during the former Moon Jae-in administration. However, North Korea has issued a warning against the joint exercise, saying that America and its followers will face serious security jitters. In addition, on July 11^th, North Korea fired Multiple Rocket Launchers (MRL) against the F-35A stealth fighter jets exercise. According to Moon Seong-mook, an analyst at the Korea Research Institute for National Strategy, South Korea and the U.S. have never conducted a preemptive attack on North Korea since the peace treaty. Therefore, North Korea must recognize that the exercises do not pose a direct threat. Its claim that the joint military drills are a threat is merely a justification for further nuclear development. In this confrontational situation, South Korea has announced that they will closely monitor North Korea’s behavior while strengthening the alliance between South Korea and the U.S.
