Exploring Korea, Stacking Memories

Q1. Please introduce yourself.

Hello, my name is Adeliina, but you can call me Ade. I am a 23- year- old undergraduate exchange student from Finland, Tampere University (TU), majoring in Sociology. I love traveling and learning new languages, and I am studying at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) this semester.

Q2. Why did you choose Korea and SKKU?

At my home university, I took several East- Asian- related classes, which piqued my interest in their cultures and languages. Throughout this process, I learned that Korean is a unique and enjoyable language, which prompted me to come here to learn more. I also previously visited Korea in 2018, which motivated me to apply for the exchange program for this semester. My friend’s sister, who used to study at SKKU, told me several exciting stories about this place. As I major in Sociology and SKKU is renowned in the field of social sciences, it was a chance I could not pass by. There is so much going on in Seoul, which is different from Tampere, my small and quiet homeland in Finland.

Q3. How is your life at SKKU?

On weekdays, I do my homework before attending my evening classes. Then I eat lunch in Hyehwa, which I think is a nice and welcoming neighborhood. After class, I spend time with my friends and we have dinner together. In my spare time, I enjoy reading books. I also like studying in the International Hall since I do not have to climb the hill. On weekends, I try to do something different, like exploring other parts of Korea and its cuisine culture. I also took a few calligraphy classes during my time here. Last but not least, attending the ESKARA 2022 was a fantastic experience! I knew some of the artists, like Lee- hi and Coogie. I hope to explore other places in Korea, such as Busan, and make new friends.

Q4. Is there anything you would change at SKKU?

As an exchange student who is not fluent in Korean, I believe SKKU should offer more English courses. My major is Sociology, but I am not taking any Sociology classes here because there is only one English course. I believe that fixing this might benefit exchange students in the future.
