Professor Yoon Won-sub’s Research Team Develops Strategy to Enhance Lithium-ion Batteries

Through their research, Professor Yoon Won-sub and his research team from SKKU’s Department of Energy Science (DOES) have pointed the scientific community into a new direction regarding lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of rechargeable battery used in most consumer electronics due to their relatively high energy density and low self-discharge rate. While lithium-ion batteries have already come a long way, people are continuing to become more reliant on their everyday devices, and soon, the public is going to feel the need for batteries with an even higher power density. Although increasing the nickel content would significantly increase the power of these batteries, this is not ideal, as doing this may lead to safety hazards caused by thermal expansion and oxygen vacancies. Prof. Yoon and his team focused their research on how thermal expansion and oxygen vacancies affected the thermal stability of nickel-rich cathode materials, in hopes of providing guidance for further research in advancing the existing lithium-ion battery. The team presented several key factors that would improve the function of the lithium-ion battery, and scientists are looking forward to the implementation of these tips in future manufacturing. The team’s research was published online in the scientific journal Advanced Science on April 24^th and was chosen to be the journal’s cover story on May 15^th.
