Impersonation of Students Happened During WebEx Real-time Lecture

On October 17^th, there was a case of a student impersonating other students in a real-time lecture of an Introduction of Mass Communication class, a major subject of the Department of Media Communication. Accordingly, the school board has announced to lecturers to be cautious with WebEx security to prevent similar cases happening again. Impersonation cases repeatedly occurred after that time. The student who impersonated another student’s account privately messaged other students through WebEx chat rooms. Additionally, not only did he impersonate other students but also participated in class with non-existing names and student numbers. The student who had his WebEx account stolen said, “I was very disconcerted and very stressed to go through this kind of case.” Jin Su-hwan (Senior, Department of Media Communication), a student in that class said, “I was very surprised to see this kind of incident happening in a WebEx class”, and “I would have been so embarrassed if I were the victim of the impersonation.” Hong Seong-yeol, the leader of Information and Communication Team (ICT) said, “It is possible to impersonate others when the students don’t turn on cameras when the professor or lecturer checks the attendance, as there is no way to check their identity,” explaining how this impersonation incident could happen. The school board has informed lecturers about the settings of WebEx to prevent this kind of case happening again. Mr. Hong said, “We have informed the lecturers on changing meeting room numbers, meeting room reservations, and setting passwords for the meeting rooms through continuous manual updates and usage briefings.”
