Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the 50th state of the United States (U.S.), Hawaii, comprises of 137 islands grouped into eight major islands. The oldest of the major islands, Kauai, emerged around 5 million years ago, while the youngest Big Island is less than half a million years old. Formed over millions of years and varying in climate, each island has its own unique landscapes and coastal cliffs, showcasing its range of natural beauty. Currently, around 40% of the state’s population is Asian American, mainly due to the large-scale immigration of laborers from countries such as China and Japan since the late 1800s. Due to its rich diversity, Hawaii is often nicknamed the “Rainbow State,” symbolizing the coexistence of varied cultures. True to its name, rainbows frequently appear across the islands, enhancing the state’s colorful charm. Among the islands, Oahu serves as Hawaii’s economic hub, where 70% of the state’s population reside, and Honolulu International Airport is located. It remains one of the most beloved travel destinations in the world, offering both awe-inspiring natural beauty and a vibrant city atmosphere.

To make one’s Hawaii trip more memorable, consider these tips. With its constant temperature of around 25°C, low humidity, and bright sunshine throughout the year, Hawaii offers an ideal escape, especially during the winter months in South Korea. It holds many festivals during the Christmas and New Year season, making it an especially great time to visit. In addition, while many Kingos may look forward to enjoying water activities, it is essential to remember that there are coral reefs underwater. Stay cautious not to step on or touch them, and be sure to purchase reef-safe sunscreen, which can be bought at any nearby ABC Store. Moreover, when it comes to paying for meals or services, Hawaii has a tipping culture. Although optional, leaving a tip of 15% to 20% of the total bill is considered standard practice. Lastly, there are two Hawaiian words, Aloha and Mahalo, which will be useful for Kingos to know when visiting the island. Aloha is a greeting of love and peace, while Mahalo is used to express gratitude for warm hospitality, reflecting the spirit of Hawaiian locals.

Located on the southeastern side of Oahu, Hanauma Bay is renowned for its famous snorkeling spots, alluring visitors with its picture-perfect colors of crystal blue and green. Because of its daily visitor limitation and early closing time in the afternoon, it is recommended to head to the bay as early as possible. Enter the giant natural aquarium to explore its stunning coral reefs and diverse array of tropical fish, embarking on a marvelous snorkeling experience.

For a trekking route offering scenic views of Waikiki Beach, the SKT highly recommends hiking the trail on Diamond Head. Its name originates from the late 1800s, when British sailors mistook the sparkling calcite crystals on its slopes for diamonds. Although the trail may seem steep and challenging initially, it takes only around an hour to reach the summit. Once on top, Kingos will surely admire the panoramic view of Waikiki and be reminded of nature’s incredible ability to shape such a stunning volcanic crater.

Away from the hustle and bustle, Waimanalo Bay Beach Park, situated on Oahu’s east coast, offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere. As the longest beach on Oahu, its stunning sandy shore stretches out for over 8km, surrounded by the majestic Koolau Range and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Take a moment to appreciate locals jogging along the shore with their dogs and enjoying picnics with a burger or a musubi, a Japanese rice ball. The Hawaiian laidback, no-rush vibe makes time seem to move slower, giving Kingos a chance to pause and enjoy the moment.

Naturally awakened by the gentle ocean breeze and warm sunlight through the window, another beautiful day at Waikiki Beach awaits Kingos. Before joining the surfers strolling on the shore, it is time for a surfer’s breakfast: an açaí bowl. Located across the Ala Wai Canal, a single spoon from Honolulu Coffee’s açaí bowl — topped with fresh berries, sweet banana, and crunchy granola — brings a burst of happiness. While heading to the beach, be sure to also stop by Kona Coffee Purveyors on the first floor of the International Market Place. Their iced Kona coffee provides the perfect energy boost for a day of wave riding. Waikiki Beach is ideal for beginner surfers, as its uniform sea depth makes it relatively safe even a bit away from shore. Surf instructors are also stationed across the coast, ready to guide on correct surfing postures and catching the perfect wave. While paddling through the vigorous waves can be tiring after countless failed attempts, the moment one rises on the board and rides the wave across the wind, Kingos will surely be enthralled with the thrill, ready to return for more. After an adrenaline-filled, heart-pounding day at sea, settle into a beachside bar with a piña colada in hand as the sun slowly begins to set. As the sky turns into an irreplicable palette of colors and everyone claps in awe to the sun fading below the horizon, Kingos are destined to fall in love with Hawaii.

The Beginning of Waikiki’s Second Chapter
The Beginning of Waikiki’s Second Chapter

Although it may seem that nothing can surpass the beauty of Hawaii’s sunlight, the second act of Waikiki begins once the sun sets. Under the dusk sky painted in hints of pink and orange, wander the streets until one reaches a shopping paradise: the Ala Moana Center. While picking up souvenirs, including the iconic Honolulu Cookie Company’s shortbread cookies and the cutest tanned Hello Kitty plushie, live music will be heard from all around. Drawn by the beachside live performances, take a seat at Mai Tai Bar. Enjoy some fresh salmon, avocado poke, and a medium-rare steak cooked to perfection, paired with a glass of wine. As fireworks light up and create a festivallike atmosphere, Waikiki’s nightlife will never fail to captivate everyone. After dinner, take a leisurely walk along the streets to find Henry’s Place, a hidden gem of a sorbet shop in Waikiki. Now, with a cup of fruit sorbet, continue to walk along the shore. At last, the finale of the night will unfold before all at the mesmerizing night sea. Close one’s eyes and feel the strong yet calming sounds of the waves. Now, slowly open them back again and gaze out at a sky full of stars, shimmering more beautifully than any other jewel in the world.

If someone asks which vacation spot shines the brightest, many might say Hawaii. However, it is only on the final night, on one of its breathtaking islands, sitting in the bar and looking out at the dreamlike ocean under the night sky, that they will realize: Hawaii is not just another vacation spot. It is a radiant jewel that anyone and everyone will forever long to return to.
