In the fourth Urban Planning Committee meeting last March, the Seoul Metropolitan Government approved a revised facility development plan for Sungkyunkwan University’s (SKKU) Humanities and Social Sciences Campus (HSSC). As a part of this, SKKU will expand research and lecture spaces by constructing an 11-story Future Innovation Hall and a 2-story Geumjandi Hall. This decision, which is among Seoul City’s university urban planning innovation policy, aims to foster entrepreneurship and technological advancements while supporting future talent. Now designated an innovation growth zone, the maximum building height in the area has been increased from 20 to 52m, allowing for more flexible space layouts. The plan also includes the creation of an open campus, providing community access to parking lots, open lecture halls, and galleries. Additionally, pedestrian pathways connecting nearby low-rise residential areas will be improved, and sustainable development strategies — including ecofriendly construction, solar power system, and rainwater utilization — will move the school toward establishing a green campus based on Low Impact Development (LID) principles. The Future Innovation Hall is set to break ground in June 2026 and be completed by 2029, while the Geumjandi Hall is expected to begin construction in 2031. The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to keep supporting university space innovation, ensuring they continue to serve as hubs for talent development and technological progress.
