The 21st presidential election date is set for Tuesday, June 3rd. Per the Constitution and the Public Official Election Act, the presidential election must be held within 60 days of the vacancy. Thus, the National Election Commission began registering the preliminary candidates for the 21st presidential election on April 4th, as former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment was confirmed. Accordingly, parties elected their candidate by reflecting 50% of the party vote and 50% of the public opinion poll, resulting in a total of six final bids. Among the leading political parties with the most seats in 14 News in Brief the National Assembly, Lee Jae-myung is the candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea. He joined the Uri Party in 2005 and became Seongnam City mayor in 2010. Lee was also a candidate in the 20th presidential election held in 2022, but lost to Yoon by 0.73%p. On the other hand, the People Power Party candidate is Kim Moon-soo, who resigned as labor minister on April 8th and announced his presidential bid. Kim, a former labor activist who later shifted to the conservative camp, had previously served as the governor of Gyeonggi Province from 2006 to 2014. In accordance with the procedures, overseas voting was held from May 20th to 25th, and early voting was held for two days within Korea from the 29th to 30th. As it is an early presidential election, the winning candidate will assume their presidency immediately after the election without a separate transition committee.
