On July 31st, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) was selected for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Star Fellowship Support Program, led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP). This newly launched program builds upon the government’s AI Graduate School Support Initiative, which has been in place since 2019. Its main objective is to nurture top-tier next-generation researchers at the master’s and doctoral levels and support ambitious AI research. As part of the program, SKKU will receive a total of ₩11 billion in government funding over the next six years, until December 2030. The university plans to utilize this funding to promote cutting-edge research and foster talent capable of driving innovation in the future AI market. The project will be led by Professor Lee Ji-hyung of the Department of AI at SKKU. The project team aims to develop hypermodality-based reasoning, retrieval, and generation technologies for hyper-personalized knowledge companion AI models, as well as synergistic AI multi-agent technologies for companion-type AI services. The core vision is to realize “Human×AI Collaborative Intelligence,” enabling humans and AI to coexist and work together in harmony. In addition, a diverse group of faculty members, including newly appointed professors, will participate in the project. SKKU intends to strengthen its cognitive ecosystem foundation and promote interdisciplinary convergence as it expands the scope of its AI research.
